Lose Upto 10 Pounds with Cabbage Soup

This low-fat, high-fiber diet promises loss of up to 10 pounds in one week. It is not suitable for long-term weight loss and should be followed for only seven days. The recipe for the namesake cabbage soup includes a variety of vegetables as well as cabbage. Although the diet provides a good kick-start to more moderate diets, some people find the soup bland and report feeling light-headed and weak.

The Cabbage Soup Diet Menu Plan

The diet itself is fairly rigid: On day one, followers can eat all of the fruit they want--except bananas -- and soup. The second day, dieters are allowed fresh, raw or cooked vegetables along with soup and a baked potato with butter, but no fruit. The third day is a mixture of the first and second day, with soup, fruits and vegetables allowed, but no baked potato. Day four allows as many as eat bananas and as much skim milk as are desired, along with soup. The fifth day is devoted to beef and tomatoes, with as much as 20 ounces of beef allowed along with as many as six fresh tomatoes and a great deal of water and at least one serving of soup. Day six allows as much beef and vegetables as are desired, but no potatoes. The final day of the diet advises followers to stuff themselves with brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables, along with at least one serving of soup.

Does the Cabbage Soup Diet work?

The cabbage soup diet is designed for quick weight loss. While a dieter may find they lose weight on the diet over the short term, they are not changing any of the behaviors that lead them to become overweight in the first place. As a result, any weight lost will likely be gained back when a person returns to their previous eating habits. There are many other diets available that will do a better job of teaching a person how to combine healthy eating and exercise to achieve their weight loss goals.

Tips to remove Excessive Hair on your Body

If you have excessive hair all over your body, you may need to combine various methods of hair removal. Here are some practical solutions.

What is a full body wax? I seem to have a lot of hair in various places, and I don't think that waxing would be efficient. I was considering laser hair removal but it is very costly, and I don't even think that would be efficient enough. But for now is there anything that I could do at all? Please help me..?

A full-body wax means just what it implies ? hair removal from the entire body, including the arms, underarms, back, chest (if required), stomach, genital region and legs.

Here?s what you can do:

Stick with waxing your arms, underarms and legs regularly. You could go in for a bikini wax once a month if you can take the pain, or you can shave your genital region once a week, after making sure the hair has been softened with soap for at least five minutes before shaving. Follow up with moisturiser.

Laser hair removal is indeed very costly, but there is really no other method of permanent hair removal. You could also consider electrolysis, but laser is a newer and superior method, and you could consider going in for this for small areas at a time, over a span of a few years. Hairy sideburns/forehead for example can be removed by laser therapy while you can thread your upper lip, chin and eyebrows.

Face

An interesting product is out in the markets in America, called Hair Off. This is a facial buffer-like hair remover. It is a three-inch tool that performs in the same manner as a pumice stone. You attach a fine sandpaper-like paper on the surface and gently scrub dry, hairy facial skin with it. The hair comes off along with any dead skin. Also, in-growths are not formed and your skin feels smooth. It costs approximately 5 dollars (less than Rs. 250) at CVS, and paper refills are also available ? definitely a good option for removal of facial hair.

Bleaching is always a preferable option to waxing facial hair, but if you have a lot of facial hair and are dark skinned, the hair will show nevertheless, and it is best to get the hair off by laser therapy or by trying Hair Off. Don?t use hair removal creams on the face.

Stomach, Chest and Back

For hair on your stomach and back, use a hair removal lotion if you ever need to wear clothing that reveals these areas. These area is normally mostly covered, so only every once in a while, like if you are going for a beach holiday or wearing a sari, you can consider using hair removal lotion. Remember that hair removal lotions are not always suitable for regular use, and should preferably be used only occasionally.

On a regular basis apply a besan, haldi and curd mixture to your stomach and back (if hairy) and scrub off with your hands when the mixture dries on your skin. You may need someone to help you with your back.

Remove hair from your nipples by cutting it off. You can also use Face Off on your nipples. Make sure you are gentle.

Pumice Stone

Use a pumice stone on your legs everyday. This not only helps reduce hair growth over a period of time but also helps prevent in-growths caused by waxing. When using a pumice stone remember to scrub your skin with gentle motions, after applying soap and water. Scrubbing your skin too hard will cause bruising.

Using a pumice stone as a method for hair removal as opposed to using it for combating in-growths is most effective when used on areas that you do not wax or shave. So you scrub your stomach with a pumice stone gently everyday, and over a period of time the hair-growth will diminish.

FRUITS AND THEIR NUTRIENTS

Let's face it, our food preferences are based on taste, not nutrition, which is why fruit is such a great food. Fruit tastes sweet and interesting. They have an agreeable texture, crunchy like apples, smooth like a peach, and juicy like an orange. And most fruits are surprisingly nutritious. Though not as nutrient-dense as vegetables, fruits are an important source of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. Some fruits are more nutritious than others, but with fruits, as with vegetables and grains, variety is the spice of life. Nutrients that one fruit lacks, another fruit provides. Fructose is the principle sugar in most fruits, though sucrose is the principle sugar in others, such as oranges, melons, and peaches. Fructose is absorbed slowly into the bloodstream, so fruit gives you energy without triggering the ups and downs of the insulin cycle.

Apple

Apple
An apple a day may not keep the doctor entirely away, but apples are nutritious, convenient, and always available. Apples get an A+ in fiber content, since they contain a lot of the soluble fiber, pectin, that helps to lower cholesterol. They also contain some cancer-fighting flavenoids. Eating a whole apple is more nutritious than drinking apple juice, since the fiber, vitamins, and minerals may be processed out of the juices. When the flesh of an apple turns brown, it means some of the nutrients have oxidized and are lost. To get the best that any fruit has to offer, eat it fresh.

Apricot

Apricot
Five apricots contain around the same number of calories as one apple, but they have much more protein, calcium, iron, vitamin K, zinc, vitamin A, and folic acid. Apricots are high in beta carotene, as well as potassium and fiber. You'll find them on our list of the top ten nutritious fruits.

Apricot, dried. Dried apricots are a particularly good source of beta carotene, potassium, and fiber (3 grams per 10 dried apricot halves). When purchasing dried apricots, read the label. Preservatives, such as sulfites or sulfur- dioxide, are often used to maintain apricots' orange color. These will be listed on the label. Sulfites can be an allergen for some people. You can purchase sulfite-free apricots in health food stores. Even though they are a less appealing, brownish color, they are equally nutritious. It is not worth consuming extra sulfites just so the apricots look more orange.

Avocado

Avocado
Avocados are usually thought of as a vegetable, but they are really a fruit, with more nutrition than any other fruit. Avocados are especially high in protein, fiber, niacin, thiamin, riboflavin, folic acid, and zinc. Avocados get the lion's share of their calories from fat, and while these are the heart-healthy monounsaturated fats with no cholesterol, you pay a caloric price. While weight-conscious adults might want to stick to an apple a day rather than an avocado a day, the high calorie content of avocados makes them a good food for growing children. The fat content of avocados depends upon the variety.

Florida avocados have about half the fat and two-thirds the calories of California avocados. Another healthy fat that avocados contain are Omega 3 fatty acids. Because avocados are so nutrient dense, we included them in our top twelve foods as well as in our "Top Ten Fruits" list.

Buying and serving tips. Avocados ripen after picking. Buy the avocado when it is under-ripe, meaning it is firm, but not hard - squeezing it gently does not leave a dent. Store avocados at room temperature for three or four days until they are soft enough to dent on squeezing. To speed ripening, place the avocados in a paper bag and store at room temperature until they are ready to eat (three to five days). Including an apple in the bag speeds up the process even more.

For easy eating, halve the avocado by running a knife lengthwise around the middle of the avocado. Hold the avocado in both hands and twist at the cut. The halves will separate easily, leaving the pit in one half. Spoon out the flesh and enjoy. Mash avocados into dip for children. For adults, add tomatoes, onion, and garlic to make guacamole.

Storing Guacamole or Half an Avocado

Avocado turns brown after it's been exposed to air. To prevent this, sprinkle lemon or lime juice on the cut side of half an avocado and cover it tightly with plastic wrap. Include lemon or lime juice in your guacamole recipe to keep it from turning brown.

NUTRITIP: (Avocado Sandwich)
A favorite sandwich for growing children (and genetically lean adults) is whole wheat bread, a thin layer of peanut butter, thinly sliced tomatoes, a thick layer of guacamole, and a mound of alfalfa sprouts. For added richness, add a thin layer of lowfat mayonnaise. Enjoy!

Banana

Banana
Bananas mash easily for baby food and blend nicely into a sweet smoothie. They contain a lot of potassium, so eating a daily banana is helpful to people on certain medications, such as diuretics, which may deplete the body of potassium. Even though most bananas are imported, the easy-to-peel feature of bananas makes it easy to peel the pesticides off.

Blueberries

On the surface, blueberries don't seem to pack any particular standout nutrient.. Yet recent studies have shown that blueberries have healthy stuff in their skin, an antioxidant, cancer-fighting phyto, called anthocyanin . Blueberries are an excellent fruit for making smoothies. Their sweet taste and rich purple color give any smoothie a more appealing taste, texture, and color.

Boysenberries

Boysenberries are a great source of fiber.

Cantaloupe

Cantaloupes are high in vitamin C, beta carotene, and potassium.

Cherries

Cherries contain some beta carotene, and sour cherries contain more beta carotene than sweet cherries.

Dates

Dates are a good source of fiber, iron, and niacin.

Figs (dried)

Dried figs are high in calories and high in carbs, but they also contain abundant amounts of other nutrients, such as calcium, fiber, protein, and potassium. They make an excellent snack and add fiber when they're chopped up and included in cookies. Because of the high fiber and high calcium content, they get an honorable mention on our "Top Ten Fruits" list. Their high carbohydrate and sugar content could be a drawback for sugar-sensitive individuals, but for athletes, figs would be a great addition to a pre-game meal.

Grapefruit

Grapefruit is a great fruit, low in calories, high in fiber, with lots of vitamin C. If you get the pink or red variety instead of the white, grapefruit is also rich in beta carotene. Half the fiber is the insoluble type (good for the intestines) and half is soluble pectin fiber (good for the heart). Remember, though, that a lot of fiber is in the stringy walls that separate the segments. If you're digging out grapefruit segments with a spoon, you'll miss out on much of the fiber.

Grapes

The skin of red and purple grapes contain cancer-fighting anthocyanin pigments, similar to the ones in blueberries. Green, seedless grapes are not exactly nutritional standouts, but kids love to snack on them, especially on hot days. They're a popular alternative to soda or candy.

NUTRITIP (Good Grapes)

Red wine has recently been touted as a health food because of studies showing a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease in cultures that drink a lot of red wine. Red wine may help to lower cholesterol. Yet, the health properties are probably not in the alcohol , but in the grapes. Grape skins contain resveratrol , a substance that can lower cholesterol and prevent fats in the bloodstream from sticking together and clogging arteries. Eating grapes, drinking dark grape juice that is made with skins, or eating raisins may be just as heart-healthy as drinking wine, without the health hazards of alcohol.

Eating the whole fruit is better than drinking the juice of the fruit, especially if you are watching your weight. A cup of apple juice contains around 115 calories with minimum nutrition, yet a medium-size apple has only 80 calories with a lot more nutrition. With the whole fruit you get the filling effect of fiber, so you tend to eat less. Juice goes down quickly, so you tend to want more.

Guava

Guavas are hard to find, but gobble them up when you can. They rate high among the fruits for fiber and vitamin E. Guava juice is readily available in the juice section of most supermarkets, yet it contains added corn syrup, diluting the nutritional value compared to the raw fruit.
Honeydew melon. Honeydew melon is not nearly as nutritious as cantaloupe. Cantaloupe contains half the number of calories, nearly twice the protein, slightly more fiber, more calcium, and a lot more beta carotene, compared with only a trace in honey-dew.

Kiwi

Kiwi is a great source of vitamin C. Try cutting it in half and eating it out of the peel with a spoon.

Lemon and lime

Lemons and limes are a moderately good source of vitamin C, with lemons containing about one-third more vitamin C than limes. Lemon and lime juice add flavor to dishes, which can be helpful if you're cutting back on salt.

NUTRITIP (Fruit Fresheners)

Lemon acts like an antioxidant to keep cut fruit from quickly oxidizing (turning brown). Sprinkle lemon juice on apple slices and avocado halves or guacamole to preserve their freshness.

Mango

Mangoes are high in fiber, high in beta carotene (similar to apricots and cantaloupe), high in vitamin C -- but much higher in calories than equal servings of similar fruits, such as cantaloupe and papaya.

Orange

Oranges are known for their vitamin C content, but they're also a good source of folate and fiber. They even contain some calcium. As with grapefruit, the white membrane under the skin of the orange contains more vitamin C than the flesh and a lot of the pectin fiber. When peeling the orange, try to leave the white inner peeling on and eat it with the flesh (if you don't mind the slightly bitter taste).

Papaya

High in calcium, folic acid, vitamin C, fiber, and carotenoids, this near-perfect fruit is becoming more widely available and affordable.

Peach

The best peaches are tree-ripened and therefore locally grown. They contain some carotenoids and a tiny bit of vitamin C.

Pear

A high sorbitol content, plus extra fiber, makes pears ideal for persons suffering from constipation. Most of the vitamin C in pears is concentrated in the skin, as is some of the fiber, so peeled, canned pears are less nutritious than fresh.

Persimmons

Persimmons are high in fiber, carotenoids, and vitamin A. Some varieties are extremely high in vitamin C.

Pineapple

Its claim to fame is that it's the fruit highest in the essential nutrient, manganese, and that it has digestive enzymes, as does papaya.

Plum

Plums contain a bit of carotenoids and some vitamin C. There are many varieties from which to choose.

Prunes

Prunes get an honorable mention on our "Top Ten Fruits" list because they contain at least some of many different important vitamins and minerals. Compared with other fruits, prunes are especially high in fiber (half of it the soluble type), protein, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin E, calcium, and iron. They contain a touch of zinc and niacin, and some prunes even contain a bit of beta carotene. Prunes are known for their ability to move the intestines, thanks to their high fiber content and large amounts of the stool-loosening sugar, sorbitol.

Raisins

This favorite snack food is high in fiber and iron but also high in calories and sugar. You can get the iron and fiber at a lower caloric cost in other fruits..

Raspberries

Of all the fruits, raspberries pack the most fiber into the fewest calories. They're also higher in folic acid and zinc than most fruits. It is difficult to wash raspberries thoroughly, making pesticides a concern.

Strawberries

Strawberries have two nutritional claims to fame: they are higher in vitamin C per calorie than any other fruit and they are high in fiber. Like raspberries, strawberries lose points because of the pesticide issue. You don't peel them and because of their rough texture, they are hard to clean. Only organic strawberries make it onto our "Top Ten Fruits" list.

Tangerine

This member of the orange family contains much less vitamin C, folate, and fiber than an orange, but more vitamin A and carotenoids.

Watermelon

Watermelon is the top fruit source of the carotenoid antioxidant lycopene.

Constipation

Constipation. .. we all know what it is. And it doesn't have to mean unhealthy life style. Just because someone has constipation, it doesn't have to mean he or she is unhealthy or even that has an unhealthy lifestyle. He or she can do everything as recommended by his or hers doctor and still have the problem from time to time.

Definition of Constipation

Constipation is a symptom, it is not a disease. Constipation refers to a decrease in the frequency of bowel movements. Generally, constipation is difficult to define clearly because as a symptom it varies from person to person. The frequency of bowel movements namely varies greatly: for example from three times a day to three times a week. This is why general definition of constipation is hard to give. For some people, constipation may mean difficulty in passing stools (a constipated stool is hard because it contains less water than normal), while for others constipation may mean missing passing stools for couple of days.

Constipation Symptoms

These are common symptoms you may have if you are constipated:
difficulty in starting or completing a bowel movement
infrequent and difficult passage of stool
passing hard stool after prolonged straining in the toilet
in cases of irritable bowel syndrome abdominal pain, cramps , excessive gas, a sense of bloating, and a change in bowel habits
distended abdomen, headaches, and loss of appetite
coated tongue, offensive breath, and bad taste in your mouth

Constipation Causes

There are many possible constipation causes. Constipation may result from a poor diet, poor bowel habits, or problems in elimination of stool, whether physical, functional, or voluntary.

Diet

Nutrition low in fiber, and high in fat can cause constipation. Dietary fibre provides the bulk that helps to speed the passage of waste food through the bowel. On the other hand, lack of fibre results in harder and more compact stools, which also take longer to pass through. In short, if eating foods rich in animal fats, such as dairy products, meats, and eggs or refined sugar but nutrition low in fiber, which is whole grains, fruits, and vegetables it will very probably cause constipation.

Poor bowel habits

Some people ignoring the desire to have bowel movement, and this may initiate a cycle of constipation. Namely, after a period of time, they may stop feeling the desire for opening your bowel, which may lead to progressive constipation. For example, some people may ignore going to the toilet because they are busy or some people avoid using public toilets.

Change in nutrition- Travels, Holidays This change often happens on holidays. Any change of routine can cause constipation.

Lack of fluids

Daily need for fluids is 1.5-2 litres. Without that amount waste matter dries out, which also makes harder harder to move through the bowel. Most recommended is water, and least (of you have constipation problems- alcohol, caffeine, sodas)

Lack of exercise

If you don't exercise often, things can slow down including the muscle contractions that move waste matter through the bowel.

Pregnancy

During pregnancy hormonal and physical changes are probable causes. Constipation during pregnancy may be due to several factors: mechanical pressure on your bowel by the heavy womb, hormonal changes during pregnancy, changes in food and fluid intake, anal fissure (cracks in the anus), hemorrhoids (piles), anal stenosis (narrow anus).

Menopause and menstruation

During menopause and menstruation hormonal and lifestyle changes can cause constipation.

Stress

constipation can be caused by stress, and vice versa stress can also be a symptom of constipation.

Aging

Bodily functions slow down with age and the digestive system is also part of it.
For example, older people are five times more likely than younger people to develop constipation. On the other hand, experts believe that older people become too concerned with having a daily bowel movement, thus the constipation in this age group is overestimated.

On the other hand, older adults are more likely to have constipation for following reasons: poor diet and insufficient intake of fluids, lack of exercise, side effects of prescription drugs used to treat other conditions, poor bowel habits, prolonged bed rest, for example after an accident or during an illness, habitual use of laxatives.

Medicines

Some painkillers (narcotic-containin g drugs, for example codeine) are known to cause constipation, also some other medicines, such as iron tablets and some antacids (containing aluminium hydroxide or calcium carbonate), antispasmodic drugs, antidepressants and anticonvulsant drugs.

Laxative abuse

If person is habitually using laxatives, he or she will gradually produce dependency on them, and may eventually require increasing amounts of laxatives to move bowels, and in some instances, the bowel will become insensitive to laxatives and fail to open.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common causes of constipation People that suffer from irritable bowel syndrome often have constipation, sometimes alternating with diarrhoea. In irritable bowel syndrome, cramping pains, excessive gas, bloating and discomfort in the bowel and rectum are common.

Constipation Treatment

Although constipation may be extremely uncomfortable, it is usually not serious.
Treatment of constipation is closely connected to its causes. If you don't eat enough fibers, you should start, if you don't exercise regularly, you should consider that as an option, if you're on some sort of medications stated above, you should cut them in order to treat constipation, and so on and so on. In this cases medical attention is not necessary, nevertheless, there are times when this is not the case.

You should seek medical attention if you have symptoms that are severe and last longer than 3 weeks..

If you feel severe pain in anus during bowl movement. If you noticed change in bowel habits, for instance, constipation alternation with diarrhea. Seek also medical help if you have symptoms of other diseases, like tiredness, fatigue, etc. in addition to constipation.
Also, seek prompt medical help if you have rectal bleeding, anal pain and hemorrhoids, pain during bowel movement, vomiting, etc.
As said above, treatment depends on the cause, severity, and duration. In most cases dietary and lifestyle changes will help relieve symptoms and help prevent constipation.

Super Food # 6: Berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, cranberries)

Goal: 3 to 4 servings every week

What It Does: In a way similar to wine, these fruits may protect your body with powerful anti-cancer nutrients known as anthocyans, which are believed to play a role in cell repair. Krause says research shows anthocyans may decrease the risk of several cancers, including those in the breast and gastrointestinal tract.

“These berries,” says Krause, “are also high in vitamin C and folic acid, which is essential for all women in their childbearing years. And they offer powerful anti-oxidant protection, which not only protects the heart but also may protect against skin aging, from the inside out.” Moreover, she tells WebMD that cranberries may help reduce the risk of urinary tract infections in women, while the nutrient, lutein found in all the berries, can help protect vision.

Super Food # 5: Vitamin D fortified low fat milk or orange juice

Goal: At least 400 IUs of vitamin D daily

What it does: “Essential to helping the bones absorb calcium from the gut,” says Somer, “vitamin D helps reduce the risk of osteoporosis and may be vital in reducing the risk of diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and tumors of the breast, colon, and ovary.”

Indeed, recent studies from the University of California San Diego suggest that vitamin D has the potential to prevent up to one–half of all breast, colon, and ovarian cancer in the United States.

Somer tells WebMD that a growing body of research indicates many women may be vitamin D deficient. “A combination of staying out of the sun (which the body uses to manufacture vitamin D) and using sunscreen, which blocks the synthesis of vitamin D, has resulted in many women hitting a dangerously low level of this nutrient,” says Somer.

While Vitamin D is found in salmon, mackerel, tuna, and sardines, experts say fortified foods, such as milk, are the best source.

Super Food # 4: Tomatoes (watermelon, red grapefruit, red navel oranges)

Goal: 3 to 5 servings each week

What it does: The powerhouse nutrient in all these fruits is lycopene. And, according to Miller, while the headlines touted its protective effects against prostate cancer, more quiet research has shown it has tremendous health benefits for women as well.

“Research is starting to show that lycopene may protect against breast cancer,” Miller says. "And it’s also a powerful antioxidant that can help a woman fight heart disease.”

The very latest research shows it may also help keep you looking younger longer by protecting against UV damage from the sun.

Super Food # 3: Beans

Goal: 3 to 4 servings every week

What it does: Low in fat, beans are a good source of protein and fiber and may have protective effects against heart disease and breast cancer. Beans may also play a role in stabilizing female hormones, says nutritionist Susan Krause, MS, RD.

“Beans have been around so long that most people don’t view them as a fancy new health food,” Krause says. “But in fact, they are among one of the healthiest things a woman can eat.”

In studies published in the International Journal of Cancer, researchers found that beans in general, and lentils in particular, may have some protective effects against breast cancer. In research published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, doctors found a relationship between a lower incidence of cardiovascular disease and a higher intake of legumes. Well known legumes include peas, beans, lentils, and peanuts.

As a source of both soluble and insoluble fiber, Krause says, beans can help lower cholesterol, while their level of a nutrient known as isoflavone can help in the regulation of hormones and may aid with PMS, perimenopause, or menopause symptoms. Although soybeans have among the highest levels of isoflavones, other sources include red clover, kudzu, mung beans, alfalfa sprouts, black cohosh, and chickpeas.

“Beans also contain something called protease inhibitors, which may help protect against breast cancer,” says Krause. Protease inhibitors help slow the division of cancer cells and in this way may prevent tumor formation.

Last but not least, if you are in your reproductive years, beans can give you a steady supply of folic acid -- essential if you should become pregnant.

Super Food # 2: Fatty Fish -- like Salmon, Sardines and Mackerel

Goal: 2 to 3 servings every week

What it does: The healthy factor in fish is omega-3 fatty acids, and specifically two types known as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).

“Fatty fish not only plays a vital role in the health of the membrane of every cell in our body, it also helps protect us from a number of key health threats,” says Laurie Tansman, MS, RD, CDN, a nutritionist at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York.

Some of those threats include heart disease, stroke, hypertension, depression, joint pain, and a number of illnesses linked to inflammation, including lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Somer says fish may even offer some protection against Alzheimer’s disease.

While many foods -- such as walnuts, flaxseed oil, and some mayonnaise brands -- claim the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, Somer cautions that only the DHA or EPA forms of omega-3 can be directly used by the body.

“What you get in foods like walnuts and flaxseed oil is an omega-3 acid known as ALA -- alpha-linoleic acid,” says Somer. “And while it’s certainly good for you, it requires a process in the body to convert it to DHA. And that conversion process can be influenced by a variety of individual
factors.”

The good news: You are likely to see a wheelbarrow full of new products supplemented with DHA slowly making their way to market in the coming year. Currently, Kellogg is reportedly developing a cereal fortified with DHA, while a company called Nutri-Kids has already launched a DHA fortified ready-to-drink milk product. You can also find eggs fortified with DHA and, says Somer, certain brands of soymilk.

Super Food # 1: Low-fat yogurt

Goal: 3 to 5 servings a week

What it does: As a health food, yogurt is almost as old as, well, good health itself. But experts say evidence continues to accumulate that reveals its benefits in many new and exciting ways. And not just yogurt. Somer tells WebMD that any fermented dairy product -- including kefir -- contains healthy “probiotics” -- bacteria with the power to protect you in myriad ways.

“There is a suggestion [that yogurt] may decrease the risk of breast cancer,” Somer says. ”And there’s very strong evidence it can reduce problems associated with irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory digestive tract disorders -- both conditions that impact women more than men.”

Additionally, she says, yogurt can help reduce the risk of stomach ulcers and vaginal infections. Enjoy a cup of yogurt at breakfast, lunch, or snack to help meet the U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommendation for three servings of low fat dairy each day. “It’s loaded with bone-healthy calcium -- something every woman needs more of at every age,” Somer says. One cup of yogurt has about 448mg of calcium, compared to just 300 for eight ounces of skim milk.

The key, according to Somer, is to choose a low fat yogurt with live cultures -- like Lactobacillus acidophilus. And do check the label, Somer advises. Some store brands may not have the level of cultures found in more established brands. Also important: Skip the fruit-on-the- bottom or other flavored varieties. “Too much sugar,” says Somer, who also reminds us that, no, those two blueberries on the bottom of the container do not constitute a serving of fruit!
